If you’re considering Breast Augmentation, you’ve probably started wondering about which type of implant will give you the results you want. There’s now more choice than ever before because three different anatomically shaped “gummy bear” implants have been approved since the spring of 2012.
Although superb results can still be achieved from the traditional round saline or silicone gel implants, there are several advantages of shaped implants for the right woman. Are you one of these women? Here are several notable reasons to consider shaped implants for your augmentation:
- You have little natural breast tissue. One of the biggest advantages of the anatomical implants is that they can actually shape the breast, unlike round implants. This characteristic makes them a good choice for women who are very small-breasted to begin with and also for women who are undergoing breast reconstruction.
- You prefer a more natural profile for your breasts. Although round silicone gel implants can provide youthful fullness and prominent cleavage, your goal may be a subtle, natural-looking result. Anatomic implants mimic the shape of a natural breast and so might be preferable if this is your goal.
- They do not change shape when your body moves. Gummy bears are filled with a new generation of highly cohesive silicone gel, which means the implant keeps its natural teardrop shape all the time. Even though round implants can provide beautiful results, the silicone gel or saline within can move and shift when your body changes position—when you bend over, for instance.
Although the type of implant is important, it’s not the only variable that you should consider. A board-certified plastic surgeon with experience in breast augmentation can help you sort through them; one of the most important is your overall body type, so your breast enhancement is balanced with your frame. Your goals for aesthetic improvement are also important, because if you want that youthful, full-breasted look, a round silicone gel implant may be a better choice for you. Implant size, incision sites, and placement options are all issues to discuss with a breast specialist as well.
