Gynecomastia Surgery (Male Breast Reduction)
Gynecomastia is the medical term for the over-development of male breast tissue, a surprisingly common condition affecting about 40 percent of men. Enlarged, feminine-looking breasts can be uncomfortable and highly embarrassing. Luckily, a Male Breast Reduction procedure can correct Gynecomastia and provide a flatter, more masculine-looking chest.
A male breast reduction procedure involves removing excess, unwanted fat and tissue from the chest to create a flatter, more masculine appearance. In addition to improving the chest contour, this procedure offers many other life-changing benefits, including greater self-confidence, more wardrobe options, and the confidence to go shirtless at the beach or pool.
Gynecomastia usually develops at the time of puberty. It often shrinks within several months after it begins, but if it persists for more than 12 months, it can become fibrotic and is unlikely to go away on its own. The condition can be inherited but is more often a random, sporadic occurrence.
What is involved?
Male breast reduction procedure takes one to three hours, on an outpatient basis, usually under general anesthesia. Small incisions are made in the armpit, below the areola, or both. The excess breast tissue and fat are removed with liposuction, excision, or a combination of the two. This creates a smooth, flat contoured chest for a more masculine shape.
Following surgery, you will be able to rest in the comfort of your own home. Recovery time depends upon your customized surgical plan and your general health condition. Most men return to work within about one week following surgery.
Where will the procedure take place?
Most gynecomastia patients elect to have their procedures performed in our on-site surgery center. Our five-star facility, the Clarkview Surgical Center, was designed with the safety, comfort, privacy, and convenience of our patients in mind. It features state-of-the-art technology and meets the most rigorous safety standards. We are proud to be one of the few outpatient surgical facilities to earn AAAHC accreditation, as well as certifications from Medicare and the state of Maryland. Because safety is our first concern, all surgical procedures are performed with board-certified anesthesiologists and registered nurses.
