Breast Augmentation: What is Recovery REALLY Like?

What will my breast augmentation recovery be like?

If you’re considering breast implants, you’re likely interested in what happens post-surgery. While breast augmentation recovery varies from patient to patient, there are a few things that every patient can expect to experience.

You can expect to be a bit groggy on surgery day

Most breast augmentation procedures (including ours) are performed under general anesthesia which can take some time to completely wear off.  Therefore, you will need to have someone drive you home and help you rest on the day of your procedure.

You will receive aftercare instructions from your surgeon

At your in-office, pre-operative visit, you will be given detailed instructions for your care after surgery.  These instructions will include how to care for your incisions, how to care for your body as it heals, and ways to remain comfortable throughout the process.  It is important that you follow these instructions in order to minimize recovery time and maximize your results.

You will be given prescription medication for pain

While oral medication to relieve pain will be prescribed, many people report switching to an over-the-counter pain relief medication within a few days.   Your surgeon will discuss any prescription medications during your preoperative visit.

Most patients return to light activity in a few days

Within about 4 days, most patients can resume light regular activity: driving, working at a desk job, light housework. However, it is important to listen to your body during this time.  If you are tired, rest. Your energy will return slowly over time. If you experience unusual pain or redness during this time, contact your surgeon.

It takes about 2 weeks to begin feeling normal

While your energy levels may rebound during this time, it is important to follow all of your surgeon’s aftercare instructions.  Do not resume aerobic exercise after your breast aug until you are given the go-ahead during a follow-up visit.

4-6 weeks after surgery, you can begin working out your chest and upper body

Even though most people are able to resume aerobic exercise after 3-4 weeks, they are still instructed to not work the upper body at all for at least 4-6 weeks to ensure tissues and sutures have been given enough time to heal.

3-6 months after surgery, your implants have settled

Somewhere between 3-6 months your breast implants will settle into position and your results will take shape. At this point, it is time to go shopping for new bras and new clothes that show off your new curves!
